A young woman obsessed with crime stories who confessed to killing and dismembering another woman murdered her victim “out of curiosity” to see what she was like, South Korean police said Thursday.

Police in the southern city of Busan said the woman, who was arrested on Wednesday, was engrossed in crime stories and wanted to see what a real murder would be like.

Jung Yoo-jung, 23, confessed to the murder of an unidentified freelance tutor and was charged with the crime on Friday.

The young fan of crime stories had previously told police that she killed her victim after an argument, The Chosunilbo reported, but officers soon found contradictions in her story. After her family urged her to tell the truth, Jung confessed to the police.

Authorities confirmed that they were conducting tests to determine if Jung is considered a psychopath.

“Jung was found to have premeditated the crime driven by the desire to kill someone after he became obsessed with murder from TV shows and books.” Chosunilbo reported the following from a Busan police spokesman.

“Jung also said that he feels sorry for what he did,” the police spokesman added. “We are running tests to see if she is a psychopath.”

After gathering evidence, authorities believe the murder and dismemberment was carefully planned.

Police said Jung’s phone records show that he had spent the previous three months searching the Internet for advice on how to hide a dead body.

Police also believe that he used crime novels and television shows for investigation. Jung’s library record shows that he borrowed several crime stories in the months before the crime.

Jung found his victim using a private tutor app to connect with the parents. He posed as the mother of a school-age child who wanted her daughter to learn English. They both agreed that the daughter could go to the guardian’s house for a consultation two days later.

Jung then bought a school uniform online to pose as the fake daughter. Once she entered the victim’s home, she stabbed her with a knife.

Police said: ‘Jung is short, and with the uniform on, the victim likely mistook her for a high school student.’

Having planned the crime, police said Jung visited a nearby supermarket where he bought rolls of large garbage bags and bottles of bleach.

Jung then cut and dismembered his victim and placed some of his body parts in a suitcase. She then got into a taxi and dumped the suitcase into the Nakdong River in an isolated forested area.

Police said Jung had tried to “make it look like the victim was missing.”

“Jung kept the victim’s mobile phone, ID card and wallet, trying to commit a perfect crime.”

However, the taxi driver became suspicious and alerted the authorities.

Police recovered the case to find bloodstained clothing. The remaining body parts were found in Jung’s house.

“Jung was a loner and a recluse who has been unemployed since he graduated from high school five years ago,” police said.

Jung was escorted out of the detention center on Friday morning for processing. He told reporters that he feels “very sorry for the victim’s family,” The Korea Times reported.

She added that she said, “I think I was crazy,” when asked by reporters why she tried to cover up the murder.
