An 11-year-old boy dies after losing consciousness on a Turkish Airlines flight to New York

A young child has died after losing consciousness on a flight to New York while the plane was airborne.

The 11-year-old boy was on a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to the United States when he became unresponsive while flying over Europe today.

The plane made an emergency landing at a Hungarian airport, but despite doctors rushing to the plane, the child could not be saved, according to the MTI news agency.

The Airport Medical Service had been transferred to flight TK003 after it landed on the runway at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, it said.

The child involved is believed to be an 11-year-old American boy traveling with his family.

Local media claim that the cabin crew provided first aid to the boy, who had a disability, as did a doctor who was also on the flight.

The pilots contacted Budapest airport officials and obtained permission to make an emergency landing, landing at 10:30 a.m., The Sun reports.

On land he was met by doctors and an ambulance who took the boy and his family to hospital, although tragically they were unable to save him.

The flight, which had originally left Istanbul airport at 8:56 am local time (6:56 am BST), took off again at 2:00 pm (1:00 pm BST).

Flight tracking data shows it landed at New York’s JFK airport at 3:45 pm EST (8:45 pm BST).
