Overview: Dwayne Johnson Finally Gets a Chance to Change the Hierarchy of the DC Universe black adam (2022) and stars as the main character along with Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, and Pierce Brosnan as they try to protect Kahndaq from an ancient demon.
Synopsis (spoilers ahead): What black adam (2022) starts approx. Many years ago in Kahndaq, a young man is empowered by a sorcerer named Shazam, who gives him the power to stop the tyrannical reign of Anh-Kot, who wears the Crown of Sabbac, granting great powers to the bearer.
The current Kahndaq is oppressed by Intergang as Adrianna Tomaz, along with her brother and colleagues, seek the crown of Sabbac. When Adrianna finds the crown, she is betrayed by her friend Ishmael, who is revealed to be the leader of Intergang. When Intergang threatens her for the crown, she recites an ancient spell and awakens Black Adam from her dream. Adam kills Intergang’s troops, except for Ishmael, and allows Adrianna to escape with the crown.
Amanda Waller contacts Carter Hall/Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) to warn him about what is happening in Kahndaq. Hall creates a new Justice Society composed of Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), atom smasher (Noah Centineo) and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). The JSA arrive and stop Adam from destroying the city further, and Hawkman tries to tell Adam multiple times that heroes don’t kill. Advice that Adam ignores several times.
Dr. Fate has a vision of the future involving the crown when Adrianna tries to get the JSA and Adam to work together, as Ishmael has kidnapped her son to trade him for the crown. It is revealed that Ishmael is the last descendant of Anh-Kot and wants the crown to claim his birthright. When Ishmael goes to shoot Adrianna’s son, Adam saves him, but kills Ishmael in the process.
It is revealed that Shazam’s original master centuries ago was Adam’s son. He was the master who defeated King Ahn-Kot, and the statue was built for him in Khandaq. Ahn-Kot killed the Master’s family, but the Son of Adam saved him and gave him the powers of Shazam. Adam’s son is killed and in a fit of rage he kills the king and destroys the city. Shazam deems Adam unworthy and has him imprisoned. Adam tells all of this to Hawkman and wants to leave with him without a fight. Hawkman and Fate deliver Adam to be imprisoned in a Task Force X underwater facility.
Dr. Fate has a different view that the battle is not over. It is revealed that Ishmael allowed Black Adam to kill him so that he could be reborn as Sabbac’s master and have demonic and divine powers. The JSA goes to stop him while the people of Kahndaq face the undead that have arisen. Destiny herself goes to fight Sabbac and sets up a force field to keep Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone away. As Fate fights Sabbac, he sends a projection of himself to Adam, warning him of what is happening. Adam escapes from prison when Sabbac kills Fate, and the rest of the JSA join the fight.
Adam and Hawkman team up for an epic battle against Sabbac, and Adam delivers the final blow to Sabbac as the people of Kahndaq celebrate their hero. The JSA part on good terms with Black Adam, who is not comfortable being king, but is more comfortable being a protector of the people of Kahndaq.
In a mid-credits scene, Amanda Waller warns Black Adam to stay home or else. Black Adam lets it be known that there is no one on this planet who can stop him. Waller says that she doesn’t need anyone from THIS planet when Superman (Henry Cavil!) shows up and says they need to talk.
Analysis: black adam (2022) It is first and foremost an action movie. There are big fights, big explosions and big battles. The Rock promised big and delivered. I’m excited to see more of Black Adam in the future, whether he takes on Superman or Shazam or both at the same time. This movie can definitely be rewatched because of the fight scenes. The first fight between the JSA and Black Adam was the highlight of the movie for me.
Although the movie has a lot of action, the story is light and that’s fine. Black Adam is a character that is not very well known to the general public, so there had to be more exposure than usual for us to know who this guy is and what he is about. In the comics, Black Adam is known to honestly only care if the people of Kahndaq are safe and secure, and I think we got there in this movie.
JSA was a standout for me. Aldis Hodge and Pierce Brosnan were fantastic as Hawkman and Dr. Fate and they had great chemistry together. You could tell they had worked together before and had a great back and forth. If DC ever wants to make a JSA movie directed by Hodge as Hawkman, I’ll be one hundred percent there for it.
