NFL star Patrick Mahomes’ contract dwarfs Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United deal as Kansas City Chiefs quarterback wins ‘biggest sports contract in history’: reports

Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes’ current deal ruins Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United, The Mirror has claimed.

Cristiano Ronaldo is widely hailed as one of the most popular and richest athletes of all time. United No 7 have played for some of the biggest teams in Europe and won almost every trophy on offer. He has five Ballon d’Ors to his name and only Lionel Messi has more than him.

Thanks to his maturity in the market and his constant excellence for 15 years, the Portuguese superstar is one of the highest paid players in the world. According to Spotrac, Ronaldo agreed to a Β£24m-per-season deal when he joined Manchester United from Juventus last summer. However, the inability of the Red Devils to qualify for the Champions League has caused his salary to drop.

While Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with United seems astronomical, NFL superstar Mahomes’ deal is much better. The superstar signed a 10-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, valued at Β£44.5m a year. In fact, Mahomes’ contract is the largest in the history of the sport.

While the 27-year-old earns a significantly higher salary than the 37-year-old Manchester United star, he is nowhere near the former Real Madrid player on the list of richest athletes. The quarterback is ranked 24th on this list, while Ronaldo is third. Tom Brady, in whose footsteps Mahomes is expected to follow, is ninth on the list.

Erik ten Hag questions Manchester United’s approach that prevented Cristiano Ronaldo from injuring Aston Villa

Ronaldo endured a difficult afternoon as the Red Devils lost 3-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday (Nov 6). The Portuguese superstar has struggled to participate and only managed to score a single shot on goal during the 1990s.

After the match, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted that there was a flaw in his team’s approach that led to Ronaldo’s difficulties. The Dutchman bristled at his team’s inefficient flanking strategy, saying (via Goal):

β€œI think it was stupid to do that. We deliver crosses too quickly, from too far, and too forcefully. Then we won’t help you. [Cristiano Ronaldo]. We have to bring the crosses at the right time.

β€œI think we also brought the crosses in too quickly in the second half. The right moment came from Christian Eriksen in the first half and he found it in the pocket to put the ball to Cristiano at the far post. That was the right time.”

Ronaldo has made 16 appearances for Manchester United this season and has scored just three goals.
