Ozzy Osbourne – Mama, I’m Coming Home – Meaning of the song

“Mama, I’m Coming Home” is about Ozzy’s wife, Sharon. They met when her father, Don Arden, was managing Ozzy’s group Black Sabbath. After they married, Sharon bought out Ozzy’s contract and became his manager. Known for her tenacity, business acumen and for always looking out for Ozzy, she established Ozzfest, which brought metal to the masses.

Ozzy wrote this song with his guitarist, Zakk Wylde. In the liner notes for the 1997 compilation The Ozzman Cometh.

“I had been walking around with the melody in my head for a couple of years but never got a chance to finish it until I was working with Zakk on the “No more tears” album. At that time Zakk and I were doing a lot of writing on the piano. ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’ was always something I’d say on the phone to my wife near the end of a tour.”

Ozzy gave up drugs and alcohol before recording this song. He credits Sharon for the lifestyle change, and admits he would be dead if he did not turn sober.

Mama, I’m Coming Home – Lyrics

Times have changed and times are strange Here I come, but I ain’t the same Mama, I’m coming home Times gone by, seems to be You could have been a better friend to me Mama, I’m coming home You took me in and you drove me out Yeah, you had me hypnotized, yeah Lost and found and turned around By the fire in your eyes You made me cry, you told me lies But I can’t stand to say goodbye Mama, I’m coming home I could be right, I could be wrong It hurts so bad, it’s been so long Mama, I’m coming home Selfish love, yeah, we’re both alone The ride before the fall, yeah But I’m gonna take this heart of stone I just got to have it all I’ve seen your face a hundred times Everyday we’ve been apart I don’t care about the sunshine, yeah ‘Cause mama, mama, I’m coming home I’m coming home You took me in and you drove me out Yeah, you had me hypnotised, yeah Lost and found and turned around By the fire in your eyes I’ve seen your face a thousand times Everyday we’ve been apart And I don’t care about the sunshine, yeah ‘Cause mama, mama, I’m coming home I’m coming home I’m coming home I’m coming home
