The father of a British tourist who was killed by lightning while paddleboarding in Greece is said to be “heartbroken and distraught” over the death of his son.

Greek authorities had earlier identified the Briton as Scott Seddon, 26, who was electrocuted on Monday afternoon in the Agia Agathi area of ​​Rhodes while his girlfriend was reportedly filming him in the sea.

Seddon, who lived with his sister Layla and father Steve in a large bungalow in Liverpool, was described by close friends as a “lovely boy” and “very popular”.

The keen athlete, who had trained to be a civil engineer and worked in the construction industry, spoke Greek and was a regular visitor to the family’s vacation home.

A family friend told MailOnline: ‘I spoke to his father and he told me that Scott had been electrocuted.

Brazilian Wander Machado, 47, told the Greek media outlet Rodiaki: “I swam to get it out. But once I got to the board, I saw his body crouched face down on the board. His face had turned purple.

“I immediately knew that every second was crucial and I began to bring it to shore.”

Other tourists are understood to have urged the man out of the water when he encountered difficulties around 1:30pm local time (11:30am BST).

He was then pulled out of the water by those on the beach and “was still alive,” according to witnesses.

But he passed away after an ambulance and doctors arrived and was later transferred to Archangelos Health Center.

Machado added: “I was worried the same thing would happen to me because it was still raining, but I didn’t stop.”

Rescuers arrived shortly thereafter and performed all resuscitation procedures to keep him alive. Unfortunately, I found out a bit later that he didn’t make it.

An investigation has been launched by the Rhodes Central Port Authority, according to Rodiaki.

An FCDO spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Rhodes and are in contact with local authorities.”
