Sunbed wars turn violent as British tourists ‘tip Spanish mother off lounger and shove her daughters because the family took their spot by the pool’

  • The Spanish family say they are going to press charges

Two Britons have been accused of tipping a Spanish holidaymaker out of her sun lounger when she took their spot by a hotel pool.

The British men, in their 60s and 30s, allegedly pushed the mother of two and shoved her daughters in a row over sunbeds.

The Spanish family, who were staying in Fuerteventura, say they were ‘afraid’ and plan to press charges against the Britons.

It comes after reports of ‘sunbed wars’ in Spain – with people claiming sunbeds in the middle of the night, ‘reserving’ them with towels and leaving them empty for hours.

Spanish newspaper Diario de Avisos says the latest ‘violent episode’ brought ‘hammock wars’ to the limit on the Canary Islands.

The alleged attack, which took place on Monday afternoon, happened when a 53-year-old woman and her two daughters went to the pool at the unnamed hotel.

The woman, who ‘doesn’t know any English’, was sitting on an empty sun lounger when two British men ‘started insulting her’ and claimed she was sitting on their sunbed.

The older Brit allegedly overturned her hammock, which fell on her foot, her husband claimed. She got scared and didn’t understand what was happening, he told Diario de Avisos.

The Britons then pushed her daughters, aged 18 and 22.

He said other hotel guests who were in the pool at the time immediately criticised the violent attitude of the two men.

‘I went down and two seconds later the Civil Guard arrived, which separated everyone,’ he said.

Details of all parties involved were taken.

The family said they refused to stay in the hotel as they were scared and asked to be moved to a different hotel instead.

They say they will be filing an official complaint when they return to their home in Albacete on the Spanish mainland.

They will also be seeking a medical report on the mother, saying she has suffered ankle and back pain.

The hotel declined to make a comment to the Spanish newspaper.
