The best passports to own in 2023: where is YOURS on the list of nations?

  • This is how 199 countries were ranked, from the most powerful passport to the weakest
  • This year no1. It will be a surprise, since Luxembourg celebrated it two years in a row

The best passports to own in 2023 have been revealed in a new global index.

While Luxembourg was considered the country with the most powerful passport for the past two years in a row, this year’s highest-ranking visa may come as a surprise.

Of the 199 nations on the list, compiled by offshore consultancy Nomad Capitalist, the United Arab Emirates ranked first by 2023.

All countries were ranked according to five criteria: visa-free travel opportunities, citizen taxes, dual citizenship possibilities, perception, and personal freedom.

So, here are the countries that made it to the top ten…

The United Arab Emirates ranked first this year, with a total of 110.50 across all five categories. But the country only entered the top 10 for the first time, ranking 35th in 2022 and 38th in 2021.

The Emirati passport jumped onto the list because it has visa-free travel privileges to most places, 181 in total, no income tax, and a growing presence on the world stage.

These factors, among many others, make it an attractive location for aspiring global citizens.

No other Middle Eastern passport appears in the top 20.

Luxembourg fell to second place, while Switzerland and Ireland were third and fourth, respectively.

Ireland ranked fourth on the list along with Portugal as it was praised for its low corporate tax rates.

However, the United Kingdom has fallen in its ranking. Last year, he was 26 with a total score of 109.50.

But this year, it has fallen further, as it now sits in 30th place. The country only scored 102.50 overall, with 30 points awarded to taxes, 20 to perception, 50 to dual citizenship, and just 30 to freedom.

However, the UK remains ahead of Australia and the US, which are ranked 38 and 43 respectively.

And while the UK passport still ranks among the best in the world, it’s unlikely we’ll see it regain a top 10 spot.

Last on the list was Afghanistan, with just 26.50 points. Last year he also ranked last, just like in 2021.

The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, twenty years after they were overthrown by US troops.
