The World Bank’s new country director, Auguste Tano Kouame, met with Maharashtra Prime Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday and discussed the possibilities of further expanding the multilateral agency’s work in the state.
Kouame, who also met Deputy Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis here, said the bank is considering extending a four-year project to help the agricultural sector combat the impact of climate change, adding that it had committed $650 million.
It is also looking at projects on the stealth front that will focus on youth, women and also instilling essential knowledge for policy makers, he said.

Other than that, it is looking at urbanization in a big way, especially in the fight against floods and drought, Kouame said.
Fadnavis said the meeting focused on ongoing and future joint projects.
“For us, it’s more about sharing knowledge, ideas and learnings than resources,” Fadnavis tweeted.
Officials from various government departments, including agriculture, irrigation and skills development, were present at the meeting, Fadnavis said.
